The public was invited to comment on the draft management plan for northern mountain caribou in the Northwest Territories (NWT).
Northern mountain caribou are considered a species at risk in the Northwest Territories. They were listed as a species of Special Concern in 2021 under the Species at Risk (NWT) Act. Under the Act, a management plan must be developed for a species of Special Concern. The plan will provide guidance on the long-term management of northern mountain caribou in the NWT.
Comments on the draft management plan for northern mountain caribou were submitted by completing a survey or by sending your comments to the Species at Risk Secretariat by October 31, 2022.

About the draft management plan
The draft management plan builds on the federal Management Plan for the Northern Mountain Population of Woodland Caribou (Rangifer tarandus caribou) in Canada, published in 2012—and points to community-led planning in the NWT for advice on how to conserve caribou. The draft plan has two parts:
Part 1: The federal management plan for northern mountain caribou, which outlines the overall goals, objectives and recovery measures for northern mountain caribou management; and
Part 2: An addition from the Northwest Territories, which provides information on positive influences, community-led planning and knowledge gaps in the NWT.
The draft management plan was developed collaboratively by the Conference of Management Authorities (CMA)—the wildlife co-management boards and governments that share responsibility for northern mountain caribou in the NWT. Indigenous organizations that participate in the CMA were invited to provide input on earlier drafts of the plan.
Members of the CMA for northern mountain caribou include: Gwich'in Renewable Resources Board, Sahtú Renewable Resources Board and Government of the Northwest Territories. All CMA decisions are made by consensus.
Next steps
The Conference of Management Authorities will meet in December 2022 to consider all comments received on the draft management plan. A summary of the information used by each Management Authority to make its decision can be found in the consensus agreement on accepting the management plan.
The management plan is expected to be released by July 2023.
